RLP provided Architectural, Project Management and Quantity Surveying Services for the project, which consisted of the alterations, extension and improvement of the Lensfield Hotel.
The hotel is a Grade II Listed Building, situated in a conservation area near to the centre of Cambridge. The extensive alterations and significant rear extension all required both Planning and Listed Building consent. The final scheme provided 7 self-contained flats and bedsits, 2 additional en-suited hotel bedrooms, in addition to the remaining existing hotel rooms, all of which remained operational throughout the build process.
In addition, further facilities were provided at the hotel, including a Spa at lower ground level to the rear, which consists of 3 dedicated treatment rooms, changing facilities, a sauna, a steam room, an ice fountain, and a separate reception area. We also provided a new basement, incorporating a Gym facility at the hotel.
The work was carried out under very testing and restricted conditions, over a 60 week period, for a total contract value of approximately £1.4 million. It included the refurbishment of the hotel reception area during shutdown over the Xmas period, otherwise all other work was carried out whilst the hotel remained open. The front of the building remained very much in its original traditional form, whereas the rear took on a much more contemporary feel, with large areas of glass below mono-pitch roof structures. Disabled car parking was provided to the rear of the hotel.
