Dining Hall at Downing College, Cambridge

Downing College

Refurbishment of the College Dining Hall, Kitchen, Servery and College Offices.

This refurbishment project was the winner of the Regional RIBA design award 2010.

The College Dining Hall is a Grade I Listed Building, being part of the original College Court, designed by William Wilkins in 1805. Only the east and the west side of the court were built. This was subsequently extended and completed by Edward Barry in 1870 and in 1960 the Senior Common Room, College Kitchen, Servery and Offices were built in a more contemporary rather than classical style.

The aim of the project was to return the dining hall back to its original splendour, reviving many of the original features and design that had been hidden by years of successive refurbishments. The Hall was part of a larger project which started in 2005 and was successfully completed in 2009. Total project value was approximately £5m.
